Video: Analysis of emerging video codecs: coding tools, compression efficiency and complexity

There continues to be fervent activity in codec development and it’s widely expected that there won’t be a single successor to AVC (h.264). Vying for one of the spots is AV1 but also MPEG’s VVC.

In this talk at SMPTE 2018, Julien Le Tanou from MediaKind compares the coding tools used by VVC and AV1 and explains the methodology he uses to compare the two codecs. We see the increase in decoding time compared to HEVC required for VVC as well as the famously slow AV1. We also see the bitrate savings with VVC performing better.

Julien also presents subjective results which are not correlated to the objective results and explains reasons for this.

Video: A Simple Description of SDP in SMPTE ST 2110


Often overlooked, but very important for IP streams such as SMPTE ST 2110, is SDP – Session Description Protocol.

SDP describes the stream by transferring a small text file from the sender to the receiver which defines what the media is (audio, video etc.) the IP address of the sender and other data.

Sithideth Viengkhou from Embrionix takes us through some of the details, shows some examples and explains and why it’s so useful.

Networking in the cloud, by rights, should be the same in your office but with it’s a lot easier when you’re led through it. From subnets to VPN’s, this talk from AWS makes sure you can get your VPC (Virtual Private Cloud) talking to other parts of your cloud infrastructure and your office.

Starting with the basics and building up, Perry and Tom take us through the IP address allocation, address choices, firewall configuration, security configuration and then on to Direct Connect, VPNs sharing VPC resources and much more.

From the AWS Summit 2019, this is a great talk for those who know networking well and are new to AWS, as well as those who are comfortable with AWS names, but are a little rusty on the finer points of networking.

Video: Monetization with Manifest Manipulation

Manipulating the manifest of streamed video allows localisation of adverts with the option of per-client customisation. This results in better monetisation but also a better way to deal with blackouts and other regulatory or legal restrictions.

Using the fact that most streamed video is delivered by using a playlist which is simply a text file which lists the locations of the many files which contain the video, we see that you could deliver different playlists to clients in different locations – detected via geolocating the IP address. Similarly different ads can be delivered depending on the type of client requesting – phone, tablet, computer etc.

Here, Imagine’s Yuval Fisher starts by reminding us how online streaming typically works using HLS as an example. He then leads us through the possibilities of manifest manipulation. One interesting idea is using this to remove hardware delivering cost savings using the same infrastructure to deliver to both the internet and broadcast. Yuval finshes up with a list of “Dos and Don’ts” to explain the best way to achieve the playlist manipulation.

Sarah Foss rounds off the presentation explaining how manifest manipulation sits at the centre of the rest of the ad-delivery system.
