Philip Schofield, MD of Crystal Vision and Richard Lawrence the Principal Software Engineer, talk about implementing ST 2110 highlighting how to deal with some of the challenges of putting together a live media IP installation, including network security, firewalls, compatibility between equipment suppliers and new methods of monitoring and synchronisation.

Video: Automating Digital Asset Production with SCTE Messages

From the SMPTE Technical conference, a talk on SCTE 104 and SCTE 35 which allow for live insertion of ads.

Content production networks produce up to 70 different variants of each program asset to meet obligations to a growing number of distribution partners. An improved vocabulary for SCTE 104 and SCTE 35 messages enables in-band description and instructions for processing content segments of live streams. With this information, the production of live and on-demand digital assets can be automated to extract, format and brand assets to meet the various requirements.

This talk describes the critical elements of designing and implementing systems that automate the creating the digital assets. We see a modular, highly scalable architecture and and end-to-end technology for automation. And we finish with looking at how to define structure and timing in the schemas.

Video: Why Television Research Began in 1877 (and Why No One Knows it)

Another incredibly researched talk from Mark Schubin, documenting the early history of Television and ending on why the earliest work is so poorly documented. With restored videos from 1930s ‘Baird Disks’, newspaper & journal extracts, this is a fascinating history.

Prior to 1877, there was no hint of a television camera — not even in science fiction or fantasy. In 1877, eight people, in five countries on both sides of the Atlantic, began working on television systems, and there has not been a year since without television research (though the word “television,” itself, wasn’t coined until 1900). Why the “vision barrier” between 1876 and 1877? How did it get broken? Why don’t television history books discuss it? After extensive research, Mark Schubin has found the answers.
