Video: Best Practices for Advanced Software Encoder Evaluations

Streaming Media East brings together Beamr, Netflix BAMTECH Media and SSIMWAVE to discuss the best ways to evaluate software encoders and we see there is much overlap with hardware encoder evaluation, too.

The panel gets into detail covering:

  • Test Design
  • Choosing source sequences
  • Rate Control Modes
  • Bit Rate or Quality Target Levls
  • Offline (VOD) vs Live (Linear)
  • Discrete vs. Multi-resolution/Bitrate
  • Subjective vs. objective measurements
  • Encoding Efficiency vs Performance
  • Video vs Still frames
  • PSNR Tuning
  • Evaluation at Encode Resolution Vs Display Resolution

Video: The Promise of 5G

The UK’s largest mobile network EE just announced its plan to launch 5G across 16 cities during 2019 and switching on the next-generation network in the busiest locations so it’s clear that 5G is arriving. That’s why it’s all the more important to put the promise of 5G into perspective with regards to broadcasting.

IBC 365 brings together Richard Mills from the Sky VR studios and Claire Harvey from Red Bee to discuss this with Mark Smith.

The discussion touches on the following:
• What are the real benefits
• What applications will drive the take-up of 5G?
• Will it help connectivity at a live event where bandwidth is currently constrained?
• How can broadcasters develop trust in 5G?
• Applying 5G to wildlife filming
• Network Revenue Sharing

Video: Integrating Machine Learning with ABR streaming at YouTube

In another great talk from Demuxed 2018, Steve Robertson from YouTube sheds light on trials they have been running, some with Machine Learning, to understand viewer’s appreciation of quality. Tests involve profiling the ways – and hence environments – users watch in, using different UIs, occasionally resetting a quality level preference and others. Some had big effects, whilst others didn’t.

The end-game here is acknowledging that mobile data costs money for consumers, but clearly YouTube would like to reduce their bandwidth costs too. So when quality is not needed, don’t supply it.

The talk starts with a brief AV1 update, YouTube being an early adopter of it in production.

Video: High Dynamic Range in AV1

Google and the University of Warwick explain AV1, its current status and how it can support HDR with WMG’s trueDR at the IABM’s Future Trends Theatre at IBC 2018.

Matt Frost from Chrome Media takes the stage first giving an overview of AV1’s goals, objective quality tests and where we are in AV1’s timeline as well as answering many questions from the audience.

Next Alan Chalmers from the University of Warwick explains how they added HLG, HDR10 (PQ) to AV1. Also added are new, scene-referenced, HDR methods which Alan explains the works of and reasons for.
